<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Yes, I know, I shop at Trade Joe's a lot. What can I do? It is 3 minutes away from my house. Every body chill.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I reviewed their macarons last time. But they came out with a new packaging, with three new flavors: coconut, figs and apricot. I am not a big fan of coconuts, so I am going to skip that and feed it to my dog (Just Kidding!!!). Reviewed so many macarons, apricot and figs are definitely the most unusual flavors so far. The apricot one has a gooey, gelatinous center, with a subtle yet distinct apricot flavor. And as a good macaron should have, a thin and crisp outer crust but soft and slightly chewy inside. Very very delicious.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Figs macaron, on the other hand, definitely figgy. Although, figs itself do not have a very strong and distinct aroma. There are edible figs seeds in the fillings, which is a very nice touch. But overall, it is overly sweet. Overwhelming sweetness made me not wanting another. Oh well...
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Last time, the salted caramel was a disappointment. This time, Trader Joe's has redeemed itself. The salted caramel is very salted caramel. The rich caramel with the slight salty flavor together with the delicious shell, very satisfied. The pistachio macaron is also better. Instead of the very artificial flavor like pistachio flavors tend to have, this time, the flavor is nice and rich, but very natural. You can taste the delicious roasted pistachio flavor and the nuttiness.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Layer Cakes Bakery is located in Fullerton, CA. I stumbled upon it recently. I went inside just to take a look, and I saw them selling French Macarons, so I have to try them. I picked four flavors: Passionfruit, Hazelnut, Salted Caramel and Coffee. Unfortunately, I ate the passionfruit one right after I walked out of the bakery, so it was not in the picture. The passionfruit macaron had purple cookie shells, which intrigued me, with yellow fillings. The purple shell seemed to taste like taro to me, and the filling inside had the tartness of passionfruit. Flavor-wise it worked well. The texture, however, could use some improvement. When bit into the middle, the cookies were too chewy and hard, which was not very enjoyable. The other ones that I've reviewed on this blog, had crumbly thin crusts on the outside and soft and slightly chewy on the inside, even in the almost frozen state. The other ones were all the same.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The flavors for Hazelnut, Salted Caramel and Coffee were also not very strong. I tasted the saltiness of the salted caramel, but could not really differentiate the rest, even the coffee one. And I actually rinsed my mouth with water in between each flavor, but still did not get much.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So...I saw Richart's chocolates and macaron on sale on another site, which piques my interest. So I decided to try some.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Richart sells 15 macarons for $18, included shipping, totaled $33. Originally, I did not know how big these are, assuming that they would be around the same size of the ones I've reviewed before. As you can see from the third picture, they are only about the size of a quarter, which is significantly smaller than others. I wasn't very happy about that. So I was hoping the overall taste would win me over. NOPE! Even the appearances don't look that great, many of them were crushed. Richart has very creative and interesting flavors, but in this box that I've received, there were several repeated ones. They tasted alright. Blood Orange was definitely one of the most unique flavor so far. But overall, Richart's maracons are not worth it.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Passed by this store in Downtown Brea many times, but never went in. So as you can probably tell, it was a bakery, and they have typical bakery items like cakes and pastries. My friends wanted to try their cupcakes, and I saw that they have macarons. So I decided to try them.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The macarons are fairly large, which is usually not a good thing actually. These ones aren't very impressive. The meringue cookies did not taste like the usual macaron. The meringue usually has a nice crust<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> with a tender, chewy inside. However, Merely Sweets' seemed to be baked too long, it was pretty dry and crunchy on the inside. The meringue was also too sweet, and the same with the fillings. I had the coffee and salted caramel flavors, but even the coffee was too sweet. Overall, too expensive, and not worth the try.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I saw this on the menu at Bruxie a while ago, but did not have the chance to try it...until today. I thought to myself "I am gonna go get myself a soft serve frozen custard at Bruxie!". Yes, it was totally random, and totally worth it.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The custard is a little thicker and denser than normal soft serves. But then again, most soft serve ice cream are not custard base. Bruxie's soft serve frozen custard is so rich and creamy, and is totally out of this world. The texture is incredibly creamy and smooth, which a lot of other soft serves you can still taste the ice crystals. The flavor and aroma is also insanely good. You get a very strong cream flavor from the soft serve, which tells you that it is most likely very fattening, with very high content of milk fats. BUT THAT'S GOOD!!! It also has a very sweet flavor that I can't quite figure out, and very distinct. Maybe it is the vanilla that they use, or a special sugar. If you love a rich and delicious frozen dessert, this is the one. THE ONE.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Walked into Trader Joe's last night, and had a very pleasant surprise. They have their own macarons!!! Six is better than two, simple math.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Overall, the macarons were quite good. Texture of the cookies was good, expected for French macarons. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The box said "salted caramel", and I did not taste much caramel. AND...I did not taste much salt, either. It actually just tasted very "vanilla".
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The macarons were a bit small, actually smaller than the ones I've reviewed before. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I personally loved the coffee one the most. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This is one of the few unusual flavors from Haagen-Dazs' new gelato line. I wouldn't pair these two flavors together, but now that I see the actual product, it is quite unique. I did like the big chunks of black cherries in the ice cream. They provided a slight tartness and nice balance overall. However, the ice cream itself is still a bit too sweet, and a very strong flavor of almond and cherry. Both flavors can be too strong and overwhelming, so I did not care for them too much.
Heck, do you see phrases like "low-fat" or "low-calories"? Of course not. The lemon flavor is very distinct, and the slight tartness of the lemon juice helped cut down the sweetness and richness slightly. That is always dangerous, because then I can't stop eating. There is vodka in the ingredient list, but really, I can't really taste any alcohol. <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Milk chocolate salted caramel butter cookie...that is a very long and self-explanatory name, and what a great name it is. The cookies really was truly amazing, which was expected as a product of France. It has the sweet and smooth milk chocolate pocket filled with silky salted caramel sitting on top of a buttery cookie. Little taste of heaven. You got the salty caramel that basically married the chocolate and the cookies together, yet the salt just complimented everything, created this sweet harmony in your mouth. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: small;">I basically found these by accident, but a happy accident indeed. My brother and sister-in-law were in town, so I took them to this store to do some shopping. I spotted these chocolates in the chocolate and sweets section. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Sinfully delicious dessert...
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Deliciously chocolaty...
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Rich...
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Should not be consumed on a regular basis.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Unfortunately, I did not write down the recipe as I was making it. I basically invented the recipe on the spot, so bear with me.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">5 medium croissants
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">3 large eggs
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">3 1/2 cups of milk or half and half
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">400g Nutella spread
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">1/2 teaspoon espresso powder or instant coffee
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">1/4 teaspoon salt

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Preheat oven at 350F.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Slice the croissants horizontally in half. Place the bottom half in the bottom of a 11 x 7 in baking dish.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Mix milk, eggs, and Nutella together until well blended. Add sugar if needed. Add the salt.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Pour half of the mixture over the croissants, then put the rest of the croissants over. Pour the rest of the mixture in the pan.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Press down with a spatula or your hands to make sure the croissants have absorbed all the custard mixtures.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Let it soak for 10 minutes.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Place the dish in a large pan filled with hot tab water. Cover the entire pan with foil. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil, and bake for another 25-30 minutes.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Remove from the oven to chill.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The bread pudding can be served both warm and cold. Warm is best in my opinion, with a cup of coffee.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">These French cookies are quite popular anywhere. And no, it does not pronounce "Ma-ka-roon", it is pronounced "Ma-ka-hon". Macaroon is a something completely different, and taste like sweetened paper glue.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Macaron is quite a delicate item, and it is definitely not easy to make. I came across three places that sells these wonderful little cookies.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">First one that I tried is Paulette Macarons, or known as 'lette Macarons. It has a store in Little Tokyo in Downtown L.A.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Paulette Macaron are small in size, very delicate, with lots of flavors. Some of my favorites are salted caramel, coffee, passionfruit, and earl grey. Paulette's macarons are also one of the few that has delicate designs on the cookies, which many others don't have. Next time, when you are in Little Tokyo, definitely stop by the place and try it out!!!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Bon Epi was discovered by me by accident. I was in the plaza dining, and just glanced at one of their posters. It is an Asian style bakery, with mainly pastries and cakes. They have a decent selection on macarons. The macarons are also slightly cheaper than Paulette's, and bigger. But somehow, the "bigness" makes the maracons look cheap...strange. Bon Epi's macarons are OK flavor-wise, but not comparable to Paulette's. But I will let you be the judge.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Last, but not least, XT patisserie macarons. XT is by far my favorite of them all. It is about the same size as Paulette's, price is about the same. However, the flavors are incredible. I've ordered the box of 12, and each one is a different flavor, and each is so unique on its own. The outside of the cookies has a nice crust, with the soft and chewy inside. The fillings in the middle are rich, yet not too sweet. Macarons are made with a lot of sugar, but XT's are not overpoweringly sweet at all. They are the perfect companion with a cup of tea or coffee.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Last, but definitely not least, salted caramel truffle. If you thought "spiced caramel biscuit" was unique, salted caramel truffle is definitely way more intriguing. "Salted" was not usually a word that you will see with desserts.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This flavor reminded me of a flavor that I loved from a discontinued product line of Haagen Dazs called Haagen Dazs Reserved. Reserved were ice creams made with unique, sometimes unheard-of ingredients, and very limited. There was a flavor in the Reserved called Fleur de Sel, which was a caramel ice cream with fleur de sel caramel ribbons and chocolate throughout. What is fleur de sel? Fleur de sel is a special French seasalt. It is not as sharp as regular sea salt, but has a milder and gentle saltiness. Fleur de sel ice cream was one of my all-time favorite ice cream from Haagen Dazs. I was quite depressed when it was discontinued.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I am so pleased to see another ice cream marrying caramel and fleur de sel together. Salt and caramel are made for each other. Salt and chocolate also worked beautifully together. The truffles in the ice cream are chocolate truffles, which have a rich, soft and velvety texture. With the salted caramel, and creamy truffle with rich and silky ice cream in every bite, it is hard to stop. This ice cream is like a love triangle, with no conflicts and all three parties love each other with perfect harmony. This sort of harmony does not exist in human relationships, but certain in foods.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Spiced caramel biscuit...what does it sound like to you? It makes you go "Huh...". This flavor sounds so interesting and different that makes me want to try it badly.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The base is velvety caramel ice cream with the sweet caramel aroma. Like the coconut macaroon, the ice cream has this buttery, crunchy biscuits throughout. The biscuits have a nice crunch, and not soft or soggy at all. The cinnamon in the biscuits compliment very well with the caramel ice cream base, and also created textures contrast. Creamy smooth caramel ice cream with crunchy buttery biscuits are definitely match made in heavens, and definitely worth the try.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The second limited edition flavor: Vanilla bean espresso. Just from the name, I can tell that this one will be a winner. Vanilla and coffee? What can go wrong?

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">When looking at the ice cream, it has black dots throughout the ice cream, which I can't tell if they are vanilla beans or espresso grinds. The base is vanilla bean ice cream, which everyone loves. The espresso is presented in a very interesting way. It is espresso syrup ribbons laced throughout the ice cream, which create this gorgeous color contrasts against the pale beige ice cream. The combination of the espresso and vanilla mingled in my mouth as the ice cream melts, which transformed into the best iced vanilla latte that you won't get at any coffee shops.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The first flavor is Coconut Macaroon, which is definitely unique. Honestly, I am not a big fan of coconut. It is OK in certain things, and coconut itself is great as an ice cream flavor. Coconut has high amount of saturated fats, which make the ice cream very smooth and creamy. However, I am usually not a fan of coconut desserts with coconut shavings.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Haagen Dazs' Coconut Macaroon ice cream is actually not too bad. The ice cream itself was rich, creamy, with a strong coconut aroma, and actually very tasty. The part I did not like, however, was the coconut macaroons throughout the ice cream. The texture of the coconut macaroons just wasn't pleasant to me. It was almost like eating coconut shavings with that weird texture. It would be great if I can get around the pieces of macaroons, but the pieces were so small it was impossible to pick them out. I only took a few bites, and never went back.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I don't see this one coming back to be a regular flavor...but who knows.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Haagen Dazs' ice cream bars are definitely a treat. The outstanding tradition of delicious ice cream morphed into a easily portable ice cream bar, it is like happiness on a stick. The new flavor, Raspberry & Vanilla milk chocolate is definitely lived up to the standards, and is delicious in every bite. The outside is covered with milk chocolate shells, which instantaneously melts in your mouth, with the creamy and smooth mouth feel. The vanilla ice cream is rich and dense, which is exactly what you expect from Haagen Dazs. The vanilla ice cream is swirled with fruity raspberry swirls, and you get the slightly tangy, sweet, and aromatic raspberry in every bite. Raspberry in sweets just works out perfectly, especially with chocolate. This sweet frozen treat will keep you going back for more.

The crust-like cookie tastes just like a nice buttery shortbread cookie. The milk chocolate is creamy and sweet, which fully expected from Milka. However, the interior white filling was nearly non-existent. The layer of the white filling was so thin, you will not see it unless you look close enough. You cannot quite taste it either, because it does not have a distinguished taste, and is easily covered up by the milk chocolate. But overall, it is tasty.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I said "Best of 2011" because it IS the best of 2011. This flavor is the 2011 limited edition flavor by Ritter Sport, along with two other chocolate flavors which you can find in my previous posts. This flavor is the most interesting out of all three of them. It is a white chocolate with peach-passion fruit-yogurt filling. Yes, I know, it sounds weird, and I got that from everyone that I talked to. I bought it for two reasons: one, it is from Ritter Sport, which so far they haven't failed me; two, it contains passion fruit, which is one of my favorite fruit flavors of all time. Americans however, don't know what passion fruit is, and can't somehow appreciate the purely awesome deliciousness of passion fruit. So, of course I have to try this.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Peach and passion fruit and yogurt seemed like a weird combination with chocolate, but let's not forget, it is with white chocolate. White chocolate only has cocoa butter, which is the fat from the cocoa beans, which is basically tasteless. White chocolate is basically made with cocoa butter, vanilla, sugar, and cream. So really, it is very versatile, especially with fruity flavors. And it worked out so perfectly with the peach and passion fruit. The aroma of sweet peach and tropical passion fruit conquered me even before I took a bite. The flavors of the fruits complimented the white chocolate, and harmonized in my mouth. The combined flavors just burst in my mouth, and as described by one of my friend, a "festival in your mouth". I personally do not like white chocolate all that much, but this one really worked out perfectly. If you are looking for chocolate perfection, this is it. Hurry and get some, because 2011 is almost over, and they may not keep this flavor next year!!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This is one of the three limited edition flavors of 2011 from Ritter Sport, Amarena Kirsch, or Amarena cherries. I personally do not like general cherry flavoring too much, because it just tastes extremely fake and artificial. However, this chocolate does not have so much of that fake flavor, but a hint of the tartness of the cherries. The outside is creamy milk chocolate, with the smooth filling of cream and accent of sugary cherry crunch. That's right, the cherries inside are actually crunchy, or more like crispy. The texture feels like sugar crystals, so I am guessing that they were candied cherries. The flavor combination worked out fairly nicely, and not contradicting at all.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">So after reviewing so many German brand chocolates, I still can't read German. I only learned to enjoy it. I know the word "Duo", means "Two", which is very fitting for this particular chocolate.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">By the look of it, it is a combination of white and milk chocolate. If you like dark chocolate, then sorry, this one may not be for you. I love milk chocolate, and the combination with white chocolate just made sense. The chocolate followed closely with Ritter Sport tradition with its silky fine texture, and the rich milky chocolatey flavor as it melts in my mouth. The milk chocolate really overpowered the entire chocolate, and the white chocolate simply added the creamy, vanilla sweetness to the milk chocolate. I got the illusion that I was eating an extra milky chocolate, and it was worth every bite.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Ahh...the holidays are approaching. One of the many benefits, other than eating like a hog, is lots of seasonal items available in stores. I am reviewing a seasonal item, which I missed last year, from Trader Joe's: Rabitos Royale. Rabitos Royale is chocolate and brandy truffle filled figs. Translation: a fig stuffed with brandy flavored chocolate truffle and covered in chocolate. Sounds ridiculous, I know. And it is. This seasonal chocolate item sounds so unique, it will trigger most people's curiosity.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">As you opened the package, you can immediately smell the brandy, which is so alluring and mesmerizing. When you bite into the figs, you get the creamy smooth truffle fillings against the soft yet chewy dried figs. The contrast in texture was an interesting experience, and combined with the rich chocolate flavor and sensual brandy, it brings the chocolate experience to a whole new level.
